  17. <p>     Even when it comes to sensitivity, you can have too much
  18. of a good thing. The National Lesbian Conference last month in
  19. Atlanta was less than a ringing success, in part because
  20. conventioneers were distracted by the many "agreements" they
  21. were supposed to keep in mind. In deference to those suffering
  22. from "environmental illnesses," the NLC prohibited any perfume
  23. or clothing washed in scented soaps. The ban was enforced by a
  24. sentry wearing a surgical mask. Another guideline called for
  25. "parity" at all conference events. Thus half of all committee
  26. members had to be "lesbians of color," 20% had to be lesbians
  27. with disabilities and at least 5% of the members "old lesbians"
  28. (definition: "over 50 with a history of ageism activism"). In
  29. some areas, however, organizers abandoned any effort to find
  30. common ground. Because vegetarians and carnivores alike were
  31. attending the conference, no food at all was available for sale.
